The light cruiser Nürnberg was the German navy's most modern 6,000-ton cruiser during World War II. It belonged to the Leipzig class.
Externally, the ship and its sister ship Leipzig differed from their Königsberg-class predecessors in that they had only one funnel and the two rear 15-cm derricks were no longer to the side, but behind each other. This was made possible by the improved engine system, which operated on three axles instead of just two as in the predecessors. The marching diesels operated on the middle shaft, while the outer shafts were driven by the turbines.
