Formal portrait of a soldier from the Imperial German Army with Pickelhaube

The helmet is a so-called Pickelhaube, the iconic helmet with a peak on top. This helmet was worn by German soldiers from about 1842 to 1916, with the classic peak often decorated with a metal top in peacetime.
