Hoynck van Papendrecht became best known as a painter of military life, which in those years was many times more colourful than it is today. Already at a young age, he was attracted to military scenes. Until well into the 19th century, patriotism and heroism played a major role in Dutch military paintings.
Around 1875, everyday soldier life took the place of romanticised and heroic battle scenes such as the Battle of Waterloo (1815) and the Belgian Revolt (1830-1839). Leading painters of this innovative direction in patriotic painting were the young painters Isaac Israëls, George Hendrik Breitner, but especially Hoynck van Papendrecht. In turn, he and his teacher Charles Rochussen worked with officers Willem Constantijn Staring and Nicolaas van Es on realistic illustrations for news magazines such as Elsevier and Eigen Haard, making the military genre known to a wide audience.
