Large Signed 1919 Oil Painting of a German WWI Leutnant – Iron Cross 1st Class, EK2 Ribbon & Wound Badge

€349.00

Offered here is a large and highly detailed original oil painting on canvas, depicting a German Imperial Army Leutnant (Second Lieutenant) from the First World War.

The portrait is signed and dated 1919, indicating it was painted shortly after the end of the Great War. Given the date and the solemn, commemorative style, it is very possible that this is a posthumous portrait, representing an officer who may have been killed during the years 1914–1918.

The officer is shown wearing a correct Imperial German uniform and clearly displays the following decorations:

  • Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz I. Klasse) on the left breast

  • Ribbon of the Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK II) in the buttonhole

  • Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen), most likely black

The rank of Leutnant is identifiable by the officer’s shoulder boards without stars, consistent with period regulations.

The painting is executed in oil on linen with careful attention to facial features, uniform details, and insignia, making it both an artistic and historical piece. The work is housed in a period-style gilt frame, which complements the painting very well.
