This German medal, originally named:
''Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42" medal, was awarded to both combat and non-combat personnel who served on the German Eastern Front from 15 November 1941 to 15 April 1942.
The medal was introduced on 26 May 1942. Due to the bitter Russian winter of 1941-42, it was also mockingly referred to as the “Gefrierfleischorden” (frozen meat medal).
This medal is marked with “40” in the ring. This number is attributed to the manufacturer Berg & Nolte from Lüdenscheid.
